Chen Liangyu, Mayor of Shanghai, pointed out in the recent inspection of Suzhou River that 4 focuses should be stressed upon this river's comprehensive re-cleaning as follows:

1. to cary out the overall environmental protection and re-cleaning. The task for this year's environmental protection is to concentrate all powers and resources to accomplish the three-year-run plan and, at the same time, to make out a second three-year-run plan for environmental protection at a high level subject to the requirements by the country and the actual conditions in Shanghai.

2. to attach full importance to the issues about the pollution of water environment. We shall organize various powers and resources to bridle such pollution;

3. to advance the re-cleaning of water environment. The newly made environment re-cleaning planning should embody the development of both sides along rivers;

4. to build up the water-contact platform in the course of the development by district governments and combine the reconstruction of flood defense embankment and the development of both banks. The water-contact platform is the demonstration of governments' policy of serving people. The establishment of waterfront platform and re-allocation of both sides' respective density should be deemed as two important projects for the development of both sides along the river, making which functioning as flood defense and demonstrating the water-contact and serving people policy.
