The first "Garden City" in China

Through large-scale afforestation, there are in Pudong a whole group of successful visual amenity projects. By the end of 2000, the per capita green space had reached 10.66 sq.m. About 32 % of the land in Pudong is now covered by trees or grass. In October 1999, Pudong was named as the first ``Garden City’’ in the country.

Jinqiao Export Processing Zone

In August 1999, Jinqiao started the ISO 14000 environment management system on a trial basis. It received the certificate on March 28, 2000. On November 2 the same year, it was named by the State Bureau for Environmental Protection as the paradigm for the adoption of ISO 14000.

Cleaning up the Zhangjiabang Creek .

The Zhangjiabang Creek, which used to be heavily polluted, is now a new attraction in Pudong, with tree-lined waterfront and clean waves. In the new century, Pudong will continue to clean up more waterways and industrial sites. The major development areas will adopt ISO14000 for environmental protection, so that Pudong can have bluer sky, cleaner water and greener land.
